At AS Training, we are always looking for opportunities to give our learners real insight into the travel and aviation industry. Recently, we had the privilege of attending a behind-the-scenes tour at Leeds Bradford Airport, hosted in partnership with Jet2 and it was an experience to remember.

This exclusive visit gave us first hand insight into airport operations, airline partnerships, sustainability developments, and the career opportunities available within the aviation sector.

A Warm Welcome at the Jet2 Terminal

The day was expertly organised by Heather Coates, who worked closely with Nathan Stephenson from Leeds Bradford Airport and Vanessa Hearn from Jet2 to turn the idea into a seamless and well executed reality.

Our team met the apprentices at the Jet2 terminal, where we received a warm welcome from Vanessa (Jet2) and Nathan (Leeds Bradford Airport). From the outset, it was clear that the day would offer invaluable insight into:

  • Airport operations and management

  • Airline and airport collaboration

  • Travel agent support tools

  • Aviation career pathways

We were made to feel welcome from start to finish, a true reflection of the professionalism within both organisations.

Insightful Presentations: Airport Operations, Growth & Sustainability

The morning began with engaging presentations in the airport’s training facilities.

Understanding Airport Operations

Nathan provided a detailed overview of his role and the day-to-day operational structure that keeps Leeds Bradford Airport running efficiently. From staffing structures to airside coordination, he explained the complexity of managing a regional airport serving thousands of passengers.

We also learned about:

  • Upcoming refurbishment plans

  • Long-term infrastructure developments

  • Passenger experience enhancements

  • Sustainability and innovation initiatives

  • The airport’s contribution to boosting the local economy

The session highlighted how Leeds Bradford Airport is investing in growth while maintaining a strong focus on environmental responsibility.

Jet2 Trade Hub & New Routes from Leeds Bradford

Vanessa followed with a comprehensive presentation on Jet2’s offerings and their expanding route network from Leeds Bradford Airport.

A key highlight was an introduction to the Jet2 Trade Hub, a powerful resource for travel agents. She demonstrated how agents can:

  • Access media assets and marketing materials

  • Filter offers by applicable discounts

  • Create tailored customer promotions

  • Utilise insider tips and tools to maximise bookings

For our learners studying travel and tourism, this real-world insight into supplier support and commercial strategy was both practical and inspiring.

Lunch and an Exclusive Airside Airport Tour

After a lovely lunch selection, we prepared for the most anticipated part of the day – the airside tour.

Wearing high-visibility vests and official passes, we began in the departures lounge before proceeding through security and heading airside.

A Real Highlight: Onboard a Jet2 Aircraft

One of the most memorable moments was being shown around a Jet2 aircraft. Standing beside the runway and watching planes take off and land gave us a true appreciation of the precision, teamwork and coordination required to operate a busy airport environment.

It was an unforgettable experience that brought classroom learning to life.

Exploring the Passenger Journey: From Check-In to Baggage Reclaim

The tour continued through key areas of the airport, providing insight into every stage of the passenger journey:

  • Departures lounge

  • VIP lounge

  • Passport control

  • Airside operations

  • Baggage reclaim

Seeing these areas from a behind-the-scenes perspective allows us to better explain airport processes to our learners, enhancing their understanding of customer service, safety, and operational efficiency in aviation.

Nathan’s extensive knowledge across departments was clear throughout the tour. He confidently explained airport policies, operational procedures, and staffing models, answering our questions with professionalism and enthusiasm.

Aviation Careers & Development Opportunities

One of the most valuable aspects of the visit was understanding the wide range of career pathways available within an airport environment.

From ground operations and security to customer service, logistics, and management, Leeds Bradford Airport offers diverse job opportunities and clear career development routes. Sharing this insight with our learners helps them see the aviation industry as an accessible and exciting career choice.

A Valuable Industry Partnership for AS Training

Our visit to Leeds Bradford Airport was informative, inspiring, and highly beneficial for both staff and learners. The combination of:

  • Strategic airport development insight

  • Airline trade support knowledge

  • Real-world operational experience

has strengthened our ability to prepare learners for careers in travel, tourism and aviation.

A huge thank you to Nathan and Vanessa for hosting such an engaging and well organised experience. It was a fantastic opportunity to see the airport from a completely different perspective and to deepen our industry knowledge.
