Passenger Transport Operative Apprenticeship
Ensuring the safe travel of passengers, their customers, themselves and their colleagues.
What is an Passenger Transport Operative Apprenticeship?
Public transport is the backbone of modern society, connecting communities and enabling millions of journeys every day. At A S Training, our Passenger Transport Operative Apprenticeship equips individuals with the skills, knowledge, and confidence to provide outstanding customer service, ensure passenger safety, and maintain the smooth running of transport services.
Passenger transport operatives work in a variety of environments, including stations, platforms, and onboard buses, trains, trams, and coaches. Their primary role is to assist passengers, ensuring they travel safely, comfortably, and on time. Whether working in ticketing, onboard support, or dispatch, they play a crucial part in keeping the transport network moving efficiently while delivering a first-class customer experience.
This is a dynamic and fast-paced role within a safety-critical environment. Operatives are responsible for providing travel information, assisting customers during service disruptions, and working closely with colleagues to deliver a seamless experience. The role requires flexibility, with shift patterns that may include evenings, weekends, and nights, as well as the ability to work in all weather conditions. Strong teamwork is essential, as operatives collaborate with drivers, station staff, and managers while also liaising with external stakeholders such as emergency services when necessary.
This apprenticeship allows individuals to specialise in one of three key areas. Ticketing operatives provide customer support at stations and depots, selling tickets and offering impartial travel advice. Onboard operatives ensure a safe and comfortable journey for passengers, checking and selling tickets while responding to live events such as delays. Dispatch operatives manage platform safety, coordinating vehicle arrivals and departures while monitoring station activity and responding to risks such as overcrowding.
With passenger transport being a highly regulated industry, operatives must uphold strict safety, customer service, and commercial standards. They are responsible for maintaining their own safety and that of others, reporting incidents promptly, and ensuring compliance with transport regulations.
This apprenticeship is the ideal starting point for those looking to build a career in the transport sector. With hands-on experience, expert training, and the opportunity to work in a vital industry, apprentices will gain the skills needed to make a real difference in keeping people moving.
